Spica Cast Comparison

Spica cast in 2007
(note how it comes across and down the other leg)
This time, it only wraps around his waist

At 3.5 years old medium was a VERY BRAVE BOY!

In comparison, the first spica was lower on his tummy (he can't sit up that far this time, this cast is 6 inches higher, sitting against the rib cage) and it had the bar to stabilize it. (Joyfully, there is no bar this time)

The current cast has his casted leg bent a bit more and it is hardly possible to sit up.

Did I mention the Weather?

It is LOVELY here today and yesterday and again tomorrow.

I tried to spend as much time outdoors as possible and we still have the house open tonight too.

Here is what the kids did this afternoon... they went outside and played IN WATER in the yard between us and our favorite neighbors. Here is a cell phone pic of them drying off and eating ICEE's in the circle. Silly Cute Kids! Notice, even Medium got in on the Icee action! Small is standing there trying to Tall girl to share with him!

Aren't they the cutest bunch!

What a one legged spica cast looks like!

What medium thinks about the spica and me taking the pictures.

Square Foot gardening about to commence...
(this is the new bed - that will be planted with Heirloom Brandywine tomatoes and various heirloom bush beans)

What the bed looks like from the deck.

We filled in the area at the bottom right just out side the bed with sod pulled up from where the squares are now. That green streak is our "dip" where rainwater flows across the yard - we had planted a nice flowering bush there and mulched it, before last years crazy rains washed it all away. All winter it was a frozen puddle. Now, in theory, the sod should take root and at least won't look flooded.

As you can see, the daffodils are coming up nicely on the bottom right. The three square areas will soon be filled with compost and soil awaiting their transplants and seeds.

We are not sure how we are going to keep the deer, rabbits, racoons etc out of the growing food. Perhaps a deer fence or bird net will work. I will be planting marigolds and other deer/rabbit repelling flowers. Marigolds should help, once the rabbits quit eating them long enough to let them flower. The black pots are just temporary, we have some flowers in them awaiting permanent residency.

Tomatoes, Peppers & Strawberries ... oh my!

Hard to tell, but this is 36 Tomato plants, there are 2 types of Beefsteak, 1 Brandywine and 2 types of Cherry.
Doux de Espagne & Purple Beauty Peppers
Strawberries ~ from seed, there are 7 of 11 coming up!

Even after dropping the dang peat pots with the strawberry seedlings in them (butterfingers to me), I have 7 beauties growing nicely. Lost the other 4, not sure if they were up or not as I dropped the tray on the way to the counter to check and water them!

I also have an order in for 24 strawberry plants of a different variety, that will come in soon.

I still need to get my banana pepper seeds into trays and germinate them. I will do that today.

It is also time to transplant all those 36 tomato seedlings into larger little pots, until time to put them into their summer containers.

I want to transplant as soon as they get about 4" high, otherwise, the root base can over grow the peat pot, once they become root bound they have a tendency to set little blooms (too early) and they need to grow up strong and tall before fruiting. ~ If you buy from a greenhouse, buy tomato plants without blooms if you can, otherwise pinch them off before transplanting. This will give your plant a better chance to set nice roots in your pot/in the ground at home before it tries to set fruit blooms.

Happy Spring! It is a gorgeous day here. I am going to try and get a couple of containers ready for the deck over the next few days. I won't put anything out until mid to late April. I do better if I have everything ready for the little seedlings ahead of time. I want to have my deck space and containers planned out, so I know what I may still need to purchase or prepare. I still have a lot of seed packets to sow directly into containers when the weather warms up.

I don't want to tell you...

Medium is happily home and resting. We keep asking him if he is hurting. He keeps shrugging us off with a no.

He only got took one IV shot of pain medicine after surgery, then he went the ENTIRE night with NO PAIN MEDS! The next morning he started with Ibuprofen and Tylenol 3.

The boy has an ability to tolerate high levels of pain and not say or act like it hurts that is unbelievable. Inconceivable really.

Major surgery four days ago... and refusing anything stronger than Ibuprofen.

We have stronger, he just doesn't want it.

Frankly, we are glad, because the stronger stuff makes him soooooo CRABBY.

FINALLY... earlier today he tells me "It hurts a bit"

then he says "Well, I don't want to tell you it hurts, because then you make me take the yukky tasting medicine."

HILARIOUS and BRILLIANT.

What a strong little guy!

Instead of taking relief for his pain ... which by the way we wisely had FLAVORED for him ...

he suffers through the pain ... so his mouth doesn't taste bad.

We know it hurts, he guards it when we move him. He will wince when he thinks I'm not looking. and now he admits it hurts. He simply puts on his strong face.

On day three I coaxed out of him that it felt better NOW than BEFORE the surgery.

Now, we are left wondering... how bad was this hurting BEFORE the surgery?

We will never know. But I can muster a guess at pretty painful.

Thank God this is over. Yes, we have a few weeks of cast, but Healing is taking place!

Home and Resting!

Medium is at home, lying on the couch and headed off for dreamland.

The surgery went well. Dr. O expects to remove the cast early (between 4-6 weeks). That is fabulous news in this house!

We, the cute fabulous parents, are off to bed early because we are so very tired from all the recent events.

Hard to be ... Brave

Medium boy on his trusty steed

It is difficult to tell your child that they have to have surgery, again.

It is hard to prepare a child for it. It is hard to discuss it, much less repeatedly over a weeks time to help them prepare. I have to keep my informational/compassionate/brave face on.

The hardest thing about the surgery is actually letting them wheel him away in the wagon to the operating room. I am supposed to protect him, so it is difficult to let someone take him when I know they will return him to me, to us, in pain.

I feel sad and slightly scared, mostly sad. Yet, there are so many emotional points about this whole thing.

He is only 5.5 and has had Major surgery 3 times. He has had 2 leg casts and 3 Spica body casts. His surgeon has performed an osteotomy to his left hip, left knee and now to his right hip. He has broken his tibia - twice and his femur once (completely in half). He has had to wear Orthotic leg braces, multiple times for extended periods of time. He is such a brave trooper.

He is the most handsome, long haired little guy! He is a cheerful, sweet little man. He gets "tired" (I think stiff) in his joints after sitting in the car, even for a half an hour. He has an amazing threshold for deep pain.

He knows what color he wants his cast to be and he knows who (a little stuffed who) he is bringing into the operating room. He wants to know why he has to have surgery again... he is sad about having an operation. He wants Daddy to sleepover with him at the hospital and Mommy to be in the recovery room after surgery. He is choosing his options where he can and trying to be reasonable about the things he doesn't want to happen (like the entire surgery thing). He is looking forward to the yummy treats, like slushies and new sticker books. He is fighting not to be in tears about it all - I stand with him in that.

We talk about healing and Jesus and the peace that transcends all understanding.

I just feel so deeply for him. We all do.

The plate and pins should hold him until he grows off them. His legs are straighter now than they were before the first surgery. This surgery should align the hip so his leg length evens out. He should be able to walk with less a limp than he has now. It should alleviate some pain, after the surgical pain goes away.

One day, he will have to have all the pins removed from both hips and the growth plates fused together... one day far, far away from today.

It simply should be easier than this.

Seedling Progression

Listada de Gandia (Eggplant!)
Doux de Espagne (Peppers)
Another look at the newly transplanted Eggplant (they were outgrowing the peat pots)
All the little tomato seedlings, doing well!

The purple pepper plants are slow, but coming up a little.

I also just planted strawberry seeds. I was supposed to start them 16 weeks before the last frost... but I just bought them, so we will see how fast they grow. I also ordered 24 plants to be delivered in spring. I wanted to see which does better - plants or seeds. I will keep you posted.

The tomatoes are not just for my little container garden... I will be sharing about 15 of the seedlings with friends. My germination rate was high, which benefits everybody!

In Retrospect...

Medium boy June 2004 1st Birthday

Small boy Feb 2008 1st birthday

Medium boy - after cake cleanup

Small boy before cake!

Medium boy - 2004 - just looking cute!

Small boy - 2008 - just looking cute!

Definitely brothers, not look alikes though. Some features are similar, but not exact. Medium is a carbon copy of Daddy! Small looks like Mommy! Both are handsome!

No way...

Medium boy is going to have surgery, again. This little guy has had two major surgeries and is headed in for his 3rd. Keep our family in your prayers, especially March 11th. He will be having a valgus osteotomy of his right hip. He will be in surgery for 2 hours. He will come out in a one leg spica cast and stay in the cast for 6 weeks. A spica cast is a body cast from the rib cage down across both hips and down to the ankle.

He is sad. He remembers the previous surgeries. He has been telling me he doesn't want a cast or to have the surgery. He has been demanding not to have it. He is being brave and picking a color for the cast. We have been having tearful discussions about what all will happen and how. I have been trying to help him understand when and how he gets to make decisions along the way. It is a tough week ahead, and then a tough go for all of us for several weeks. It is hard to comprehend all that means for us every day for six weeks of cast and then several weeks after as he learns to walk again. This is a major surgery and major recovery.

Dr. O will do the surgery. She did the others and is a brilliant caring surgeon. His hip has what she called a "sick" growth plate, that is not getting better with its current pins. Last week he slipped out a pin. (Ouch, he however, said it was fine, but don't touch it, ha) We saw a bulge in his thigh at a bathtime, then the next day the bulge was gone. We took him in to see Dr. O and then saw on xrays where the pin had come out, turned and gone back in. The best way to fix this and give this growth plate a chance to get better and grow, is to have the osteotomy.

Pray, Pray, Pray.

This is breaking my heart for him.
